CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A mother pleads guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter on what would have been her son’s 7th birthday.
Gianni Espinoza and his mother’s best friend, Vanessa Adams, died in a deadly crash on East Independence Avenue back in April.
Thursday in court, Crystal Day said she caused the crash.
Day was crying throughout the hearing as the lawyers explained the details of the crash and the events that led up to it.
Police said the April crash on East Independence happened because Crystal Day pulled on the steering wheel while Vanessa Adams was driving. Prosecutors said Day admitted she caused the crash that killed her best friend and son right after the accident.
Her defense lawyer explained ten days prior they left home in Minnesota and just three hours before the accidental crash child protective services took the driver’s two children away in South Carolina.
“Since I met her, she’s expressed, wishes she could switch places with Vanessa and Gianni but this was just a horrible accident there was a lot of cascading events that led to this,” said Peter Nicholson, Day’s lawyer.
Nicholson said Day is a Chippewa Indian and is from an area in Minnesota outside the reservation. She will be in jail for the next few days before going back home. She will be on probation for three years.
