CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. (WNCN) — The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating and identifying a woman driving a white minivan who was caught on camera installing a “skimming” device on a local ATM.
The Sheriff’s Office says the suspect placed the device, smaller than a deck of cards, near the card reader of the ATM to collect data from the magnetic strip on the back of credit and debit cards.
Bank security personnel spotted the skimming device and called the Sheriff’s Office to investigate. Officials did not identify the bank where the incident happened.
No customer information was compromised since the suspect had not yet accessed the device after its installation, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the suspect or her vehicle is asked to call the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.
If you believe you have found a skimming device on an ATM, do not insert your card. Instead, contact the bank or law enforcement.
