LAUREL HILL, N.C. (WBTW/WNCN) – The Criminal Investigation Division of the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office charged a man Friday after a deadly home invasion in May that left a mother dead.

28 year-old James Ray Goins is charged with one count of murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

According to the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office, Goins was a part of a home invasion that occurred in the Laurel Hill area on May 17.

During the home invasion officers say Goins shot and killed Kimberly Faye Kelly, 36, who leaves behind two sons and one granddaughter.

Deputies say a second victim living at the residence — Kelly’s boyfriend — was also shot but survived.

Kelly was a supervisor with Plastek Industries, according to her obituary.

“She loved riding her motorcycle and spending time with her family and friends, especially her granddaughter,” her obituary said. “Kimberly will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, daughter, sister and friend.”

Goins was placed in the Scotland County Detention Center with no bond due to the nature of the charges.
