RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Kids in southeast Raleigh got a jump start on their school year on Saturday.

The Indiana Pacers head coach spoke at the at the Fourth Annual  Back To School Jam and Book Bag Giveaway.

Nate McMillan grew up in the community.

The event was held at Lions Park Community Center  and was organized by The Kemetic Cultural Society And System Unity or K-C-S-S-U.

Organizers say their group is designed to empower young people with programs focused on education.

McMillan, who also played at NC State  and the NBA before coaching, is one of the volunteers and main donors.

“I want my message that I came from single family home. My mother had six kids. She did the best that she could, but you can make it. You got to do the right thing. You got to be willing to work and you got to be willing to get yourself involved and do the right thing,” McMillian said.

Saturday’s giveaway benefited kids from Raleigh North-Millbank Court, Park Glen and Washington Terrace apartments.
