Dancing Raleigh crossing guard can stop traffic without a sign

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Getting school kids safely across the road is keeping one local crossing guard on his toes – literally.

On the first day of the traditional school calendar, Avery Hairston could be seen directing traffic and students at Powell Elementary School.

Hairston, in his second year on the job, can stop traffic with his dance moves as easily as with his stop sign. He works an hour in the mornings and an hour in the afternoon.

While he dances in the intersection, Hairston said his favorite part of the job is meeting new people.

“I wave at them, all the time. Wave at everybody,” Hairston said. “Who knows? It might make their day.”

Hairson is back for his second year outside Powell, standing guard twice a day.
