Pedestrian killed in early morning Durham crash ID’d

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN)  – A pedestrian was struck and killed in Durham early Monday morning on U.S. 70, police said.

Durham police say the accident happened on U.S. 70 East at Cheek Road before 4:30 a.m.

An eastbound Freightliner tractor-trailer, driven by David Walk of Ramey, struck an unidentified pedestrian who was walking in the travel lanes.

The pedestrian, identified as 50-year-old Jose Santos Martinez of Durham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say speed was not a factor.

I-85 South and North to U.S. 70 East was blocked for while police investigated but reopened just before 8 a.m.

No charges have been filed. The accident remains under investigation.
