CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) – A search is underway for a construction worker who fell into the Catawba River early Tuesday morning.
Hickory officials say the the man was doing overnight work on a bridge in the 4800 block of North Center Street when he fell. It happened just before 2 a.m.
Several coworkers went into the water to look for the man, but were unable to find him.
“At this time emergency personnel have confirmed that all employees except one have been located,” Hickory Fire Education Coordinator Terri Byers said.
Catawba officials initially said they located the man’s body and were working to remove it from the river. A short time later, officials said they had not located the man’s body.
At least a dozen agencies were brought in to assist in the recovery, as well as water rescue equipment.
The worker’s name has not been released.
