RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – CBS North Carolina teamed with the American Red Cross and iHeartRadio for a blood drive at Crabtree Valley Mall Tuesday.
The blood drive, located at 4325 Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh, was organized to address an emergency call for blood. The event was at the lower level of the mall from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Colleges and high schools account for 20 to 25 percent of overall blood collection. When students are out of school in the summer and winter, there’s a big drop off in the blood supply.
All blood types were needed to make sure there is a reliable supply for patients.
Officials said Tuesday night that 126 pints of blood was collected during the event. The total included 62 first time blood donors.
. Approximately 86 people made appointments before the blood drive.
“You’re doing something that they need,” Carey Camp, donor from Raleigh said. “Like in my own family, my brother is ill. My brother-in-law has had heart surgery. You can make a contribution, make a little bit of a difference.”
All donors received a Red Cross t-shirt, while supplies lasted. They were also eligible to receive a $5 Amazon gift card code and a chance to win door prizes.
