Man accused in Fayetteville rape captured in New York

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – A man charged with rape in Fayetteville has been arrested in New York City and is awaiting extradition to North Carolina.

Raphael Lanier Ward, 45, was charged with second-degree rape, sexual battery and assault on a female last week by the Fayetteville Police Department’s Special Victims Unit.

The suspect was an acquaintance of the victim’s family at the time of the incident on Jan. 16.

Ward was arrested Tuesday in Manhattan by North Carolina SBI’s Fugitive Task Force and with the NYPD’s Warrant Fugitive Squad along with Fayetteville investigators.
