1 person shot at Chapel Hill hotel, suspect on the run

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – Chapel Hill police are looking for a man wanted in connection with a shooting at a hotel Saturday morning.

Police responded to a shooting call at the Red Roof Inn located at 5623 Chapel Hill Boulevard at approximately 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

Upon arrival, a person was located who was suffering from at least one gunshot wound, police said. The person was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police have obtained warrants for the arrest of Benjamin Gilbert Uhlenberg, 36.

One person staying at the hotel, who did not want to do an interview on TV, said she heard the gunshots but thought it was people “just banging around.”

She and another guest said they did not have confirmation it was gunfire until CBS North Carolina asked them if they had heard what happened.

The guests said they had not heard from the hotel about the shooting.

The manager was not at the hotel when CBS North Carolina went there. The woman working at the front desk said she wasn’t working when the shooting happened, but did see police on scene when she got to work.

Calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential and anonymous, and the caller may be eligible for a cash reward up to $2,000 for information that leads to arrest.
