Truck carrying explosive material overturns on NC highway

GASTONIA, N.C. (WBTV) – All lanes of Highway 321 were closed after fire officials said a truck overturned carrying explosive material.

The truck wrecked near Rankin Lake when, police said, the driver tried to avoid an accident by turning and overturned. Southbound lanes were closed at C. Grier Beam Boulevard and northbound lanes were blocked by law enforcement near Tulip Drive.

The Gastonia Fire Department was reporting significant traffic delays in the area and was encouraging everyone to find an alternative route.

All northbound lanes and one southbound lane were back open by 4:30 p.m.

Hazmat crews were on scene working to secure the truck’s load. According to officials, the truck was carrying ammonium nitrite, fuel oil and blasting caps. The blasting caps were being removed from the tractor-trailer.

No injuries were reported. Police have not said if any charges are being filed.
