STATESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) – A 31-year-old man is behind bars after investigators say he assaulted two people and held a man captive before shoving a shotgun down the man’s throat.
According to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a home along the 100 block of Cedar Ridge Loop, in Statesville, late Thursday night.
When deputies arrived, they reportedly heard a fight happening inside the home and threats “to kill the victim.”
Deputies said they knocked on the door and 31-year-old Avery Labonze Stokes opened the door.
A man inside the home was able to run away during that time. He was picked up by a family member and taken to the hospital.
Another victim, a woman, was found along Caldwell Street in Statesville and taken to Iredell Memorial Hospital.
According to investigators, both victims were strangled by Stokes and were assaulted in the face and head. The man had additional injuries to his mouth and throat from the shotgun being shoved down his throat.
The woman was treated and released from the hospital. The man was transferred to NC Baptist Hospital for further treatment of his injuries.
Stokes was arrested and taken to the Iredell County Detention Center where he was given a $150,000 secured bond on the assault of the man and no bond was given on the assault on the woman.
