NC woman in hit-and-run that killed Army veteran appears in court

MEBANE, N.C. (WNCN) — A woman charged in a hit-and-run that killed a 23-year-old man in Mebane was in court on Monday.

Barbara Wyatt, 77, charged with a fatal hit-and-run, made her first appearance in Alamance County court Monday.

Police say the incident happened last Sunday in Mebane.

“All I know is she hit somebody in Mebane, and she left the scene,” said Mable Hooker, Wyatt’s sister.

Hooker said she didn’t know much about the accident.

But, police say Christopher Askey, 23, died after he was hit around 6:45 last Sunday night.

Askey was remembered at a vigil Sunday at the crosswalk where it happened near the intersection of N. Third St. and W. Center St.

He was a US Army veteran

Wyatt turned herself in Friday, five days after the incident, and one day after police identified her as the driver.

“I’m hoping that she’ll get out but I’m not too sure with it. I’m not too sure,” said her sister Mable Hooker.

Wyatt faces charges of felony hit and run, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, and operating a motor vehicle without financial responsibility.

The charges are surprising to her sister.

“My sister has never been in nothing like this,” said Hooker. “Not like this.”

Hooker knows this is also tough for the victim’s family.

“Hang in there,” she said.

Family members approached the bench and tried to get the judge to lower Wyatt’s $250,000 bond.

The judge said he couldn’t do that for a first appearance.
