Man dies after SUV flips off bridge into Haw River

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. – Highway Patrol was investigating a three car crash on NC 68 Wednesday afternoon.

According to Trooper Knox, a Ford Explorer driven by Larry Gene Biggs, drove into oncoming traffic. The Explorer hit two other cars before driving into the railing of a bridge. The Explorer then flipped into the Haw River.

Oaks Ridge and Stokesdale Fire Departments as well as dive units found Biggs dead on the scene.

The drivers of the other two cars hit were not injured.

The accident happened near East Harrell Road in the Oak Ridge/Stokesdale area. All lanes of NC 68 reopened around 7:10 p.m.

Highway Patrol said they do not think speed or alcohol was involved, but they are looking into why Biggs crossed into oncoming traffic.
