Dad with 2 boys in car faces DWI charge after Wake County crash, officials say

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (WNCN) — A dad was charged with DWI after he wrecked with two children in his car in Wake County on Monday afternoon.

The N.C. Highway Patrol said the driver ran off the road around 6 p.m. along Mangum Dairy Road and Brayer Hill Path, which is a couple of miles northwest of Wake Forest.

The car hit a tree and the driver, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, hit his head on the windshield, officials said.

The man’s two sons, ages 4 and 8, were in the car and suffered minor injuries, troopers said.

Damien Rashad Cannady, 33 of Franklinton is charged with DWI, not wearing a seatbelt, lane control violation, two counts of misdemeanor child abuse, driving on a suspended and revoked license and careless and reckless driving.

The two boys were properly restrained in the vehicle, troopers said, however as of late Monday night they were still in the hospital.

Cannady is at Duke Hospital listed in serious condition.
