WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Wilmington police have charged a 15-year-old validated gang member after he accidentally shot himself Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
According to officials, the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of 15th and Castle streets.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found the juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper thigh area. The teen was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
After investigating, officers determined that the teen shot himself while sitting in a vehicle. He then called 911 and reported he was struck by a stray bullet.
The juvenile was charged with discharging a firearm within city limits, possession of a handgun by a minor, and filing a false police report.
