WHITEVILLE, N.C. (WECT) – The Columbus County Animal Shelter is investigating a case of animal abandonment and cruelty that left one dog dead at a house in Whiteville.
A 911 caller reported that there was a dead dog in an empty house off Whitehall Road north of the Whiteville city limits.
When an animal control officer arrived to the house they found a dead dog, three malnourished dogs and two starving cats.
In an effort to lessen the stress on the animals, humane traps were left to capture the animals along with clean water and food.
More Columbus County animal abuse:
Animal Control will be working throughout the weekend to safely capture the animals and take them to the Columbus County shelter.
The animals were left there weeks ago and officers estimate the deceased dog had been dead for less than a day.
Bags of empty food, dog houses, fenced in cages, and feeding bowls on the property indicated that the animals had been living there for some time.
Charges of cruelty to animals, animal abandonment, failure to obtain vaccination for the animals are pending.
This investigation is ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to call 910-641-3945.
