Fayetteville teacher suspended over flag incident calls off march

Lee Francis (WNCN)

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – The high school teacher suspended without pay for stepping on an American flag during a lesson about freedom of speech has called off a march in front of his school Tuesday morning, he said.

Lee Francis, a teacher at Massey Hill Classical High School, had said he would lead a social justice march in response to his suspension and recent events in Charlotte, where the shooting of a black man by police officer resulted in several nights of protests.

Francis is suspended for 10 days without pay after he was photographed stepping on the American flag during a lesson about the First Amendment.

That picture spread widely on social media, resulted in a large backlash against Francis. He said he and his family have even received death threats.
