Goldsboro police charge suspect accused of rape in decades-old cold case

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) –Goldsboro police charged a 52-year-old man on Friday in connection to a rape report filed nearly 30 years ago.

Officials say a woman reported to the Goldsboro Police Department that she was sexually assaulted after leaving a Pizza Inn restaurant on Feb. 1, 1987.

A suspect wasn’t identified at the time of the incident.

Through the investigation of the crime, Sylvester Earl Braswell, of Goldsboro, was identified as the suspect.

Braswell was charged with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and breaking and entering.

He was taken to the Wayne County Detention Center and placed under a $805,000 secured bond.

Braswell’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 3.
