Woman reported missing near NC coast, found asleep on sand dunes

A woman who was reported missing in Wrightsville Beach early Monday morning was found sleeping on sand dunes just a few hours later. (Source: WECT)

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) – An Ohio woman who was reported missing in Wrightsville Beach early Monday morning was found asleep on sand dunes just a few hours later.

The 53-year-old woman, who was staying at the Blockade Runner, was reported missing at approximately 1 a.m. She had been missing for about 30 minutes when Wrightsville Beach police officers were dispatched to the scene.

After some of her personal items were found on the beach, the Coast Guard was contacted to aid with the search.

The Wilmington Police Department’s helicopter SABLE located a heat source on the beach strand not far from the Blockade Runner, according to Wrightsville Beach Police Department officials.

She was located just after 3:30 a.m. asleep on dunes behind Station One condos. The woman asked to be taken to the hospital. Officials said she was awake and alert when she was placed in the ambulance.
