EDEN, N.C. (WFMY) -– Police responded to calls about noise complaints on the east side of Eden Saturday night.

Sergeant Jason Mayes found a group of people on four wheelers in an apartment complex.

Authorities said the group fled a short distance when they spotted Mayes. When the group saw another officer, they turned and fled back to Mayes.

Investigators said one of the four wheelers hit Mayes.  Mayes had his gun in his hand in a “low ready position,” officials said.

As a result of being hit by the four wheeler, Mayes was knocked to the ground and his gun fired a shot. Mayes was hit in the right leg by the bullet.

Mayes was taken to a hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

21-year-old Joseph Williams is charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon.
