CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (WECT) — Law enforcement officials have taken a man into custody following an active shooter situation in Carolina Beach Monday afternoon.
According to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, there are no known injuries to citizens or law enforcement at this time.
Carolina Beach officials said law enforcement responded to reports of shots fired in the 1600 block of Searay Lane. Dispatch confirmed the incident was first reported around 2 p.m.
Police Chief Chris Spivey said once officers arrived in the area, they began to take on gunfire from the suspect. The officers immediately sought cover and were eventually extracted by other law enforcement officials.
Dozens of units from multiple agencies, including SABLE, descended upon the scene as officers conducted a multi-block search for the alleged gunman. Residents were urged to stay indoors during the search.
Authorities took one man into custody around 3:40 p.m. Law enforcement continued to search nearby homes to make sure no other shooters were involved.
Spivey said the suspect was using a “military-style” weapon, possibly an AK-47.
Officials with New Hanover County Schools temporarily placed Carolina Beach Elementary on lockdown. School officials also held buses from Ashley High School and Murray Middle School that were heading towards Carolina Beach until the “all clear” was given by police.
As of 4:30 p.m., buses serving Carolina and Kure beaches are taking students home.
