KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WNCN) – A 27-year-old man died when the van he was riding in ran off I-495 in Knightdale Wednesday morning and overturned, officials said.
Around 1:30 a.m., Jose Maravill, 25, of Salemburg was driving a full-size 2004 Ford passenger van west on U.S.-64 when he fell asleep, the Highway Patrol said.
The van ran off the road to the left before Maravill overcorrected and ran off the road to the right.
The van went up the embankment of the Hodge Road ramp and then overturned.
The van came to rest against a guard rail.
Edwin Luis Ponce, 27, of Clayton died in the accident.
Ponce was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, officials said.
Maravill and two others were transported to WakeMed for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Maravill was released from the hospital and charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving while license revoked.
The Highway Patrol said fatigue contributed to the accident.
The Hodge Road exit was blocked while crews cleared the scene but reopened around 5:40 a.m.
The Raleigh Fire Department, Wake County Sheriff’s Office, Highway Patrol and others responded to the incident.
