VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Landstown Middle School teacher is charged with simple assault for a reported incident at the school.

46-year-old Daniel Board was arrested Oct. 3 following an investigation into an alleged assault at the school Sept. 18 involving a student.

A criminal complaint filed in court says the student was in math class when the teacher, Board, got upset with the child because he was asking questions and not focusing. The document then says Board grabbed the student by the back of the head and wrote “focus” on the student’s forehead. Board allegedly didn’t let the student wipe the message off until he completed his work, the criminal complaint says.

The student was not injured, according to police.

The school website lists Board as a math teacher. According to Lauren Nolasco with Virginia Beach Public Schools, Board just started teaching at the school this year. She says he was removed from the classroom as soon as the school heard about the incident. He will remain on unpaid administrative leave during the investigation.

Virginia Beach Police said Board was released on a summons.
