If someone needs to find a shelter, they can visit redcross.org, check the Red Cross Emergency App or call 1-800-768-8048. Anyone who plans to stay in a Red Cross shelter should bring prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and other comfort items. They should also include any special items for children, such as diapers, formula and toys, and durable medical equipment and/or assistive technology if applicable.

Residents in low-lying, flood-prone areas are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and be prepared to evacuate before road conditions worsen. Residents seeking shelter are reminded to bring their medications and if possible, blankets and pillows. No pets will be allowed unless they are service animals.  If you need to evacuate and do not have transportation to the shelter or you need other assistance, call the Emergency Operations Center at 919-705-6599.

Wake County:

Chavis Community Center in Raleigh will be open as a temporary reception center for those without power or needing somewhere to go.

People taking shelter should bring:

  • Special needs items, such as prescription medications, eye glasses, contact lens solutions, hearing aid batteries, etc.
  • Extra clothing
  • Items for infants/young children (formula, diapers, bottles, etc.)
  • Cash
  • Identification cards

Pets will be allowed at the shelter. Pet-owners should bring all items for their pet’s care, including crates, leashes, pet food, cat litter and pans, etc.

Durham County:

Hillside High School, located at 3727 Fayetteville Street, in Durham is now an emergency shelter. The shelter is open to any resident beginning at 6 p.m.

Durham County does not currently have a shelter for animals.
