Police name man shot by Highway Patrol sergeant in Lumberton flood

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — State officials on Wednesday said the man killed by a Highway Patrol sergeant Monday during a search and rescue operation on a flooded Lumberton street was Dennis Hunt, 56, of Lumberton.

No other new details were released Wednesday.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting by Sgt. J.F. Hinson, a 13-year veteran of the patrol.

Officials say Hunt became hostile and displayed a handgun before being shot.
