Residents James Cleveland and Michelle Parsons were evacuated from their home on Elliott Bridge Road due to flooding two hours before the fire broke out at 11 a.m., officials said.

“We’ve tried washing clothes, we can’t get soot out we can’t get smell out,” Parsons said.

Fire officials say once power was restored, the house “exploded.” The exact cause remains under investigation, but officials say it appears the fire was accidental.

“Only one thing was salvageable and that was her father’s Army uniform and a fireman brought that out,” Cleveland said.

Parsons said the fire was “devastating.”

“The next devastating thing would be losing a family member,” Parsons said.

Cleveland and Parsons are staying in a Fayetteville shelter. Their cat, “Sami,” did not survive.

The family has applied for FEMA assistance but have not heard back.
