STATESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) — A dispute over pets led a woman to shoot her neighbor on Thursday morning in Iredell County, according to the sheriff.

It happened in the 200 block of Society Road near Old Mocksville Road and Interstate 40.

According to the report, deputies responded to 911 calls from 280 Society Road and 230 Society Road. The initial information was that shots were fired.

At 280 Society Road, deputies spoke with Leanna Perkins who told them that she had heard someone blowing the horn outside of her home. She said when she looked outside she saw a man in car. She told deputies that she thought the man was going to open the door to get out and claimed she was in fear.

She got a gun and fired at the car, according to the report.

Meanwhile, at 230 Society Road, deputies found Timothy Campbell, 38, who had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his stomach. Campbell was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Detectives and crime scene investigators responded and began the investigation. Detectives spoke with multiple potential witnesses in the area.

According to the report, crime scene investigators processed and collected evidence that included a handgun and spent shell casings. Just before noon on Thursday investigators were working in the front yard of the woman’s home, using a metal detector to find evidence in the yard.

Investigators now say that the victim and suspect only knew each other because of a reported history of problems with pets going on the property of the other. Family members of Campbell said that this morning Campbell went to Perkins’ home to tell her that her cat was on his property and for her to get it before he let out his dogs.

Campbell never got out of his car, according to investigators, and only blew the horn in an attempt to get Perkins to come outside.

Perkins told deputies that she saw what she described as a man moving like he was going to open the car door, and that she then fired at the car with rounds entering through the door and at least one round striking Campbell.

Campbell’s injuries are not thought to be life threatening, according to deputies.

Perkins was arrested and charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle, both of which are felonies. She was transported to the Iredell County Detention and given a 350,000.00 secured bond.
