SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – A Spartanburg babysitter has pleaded guilty and been sentenced for a baby’s death.
Katie Wheeler Harris, 33, of Boiling Springs was watching 3-month-old Everly Dickard when the baby suffered injuries that authorities say led to her death.
Prosecutors said in a statement that Everly was unresponsive when paramedics found her around 11:05 a.m. on March 20, 2015 at Harris’ home. The baby was rushed to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where she died 10 days later from head injuries, according to the 7th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
Hospital workers told Spartanburg County deputies that they spotted signs of abuse and considered the baby’s death to be non-accidental head trauma.
Harris pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 30 years suspended to 15 years of active service. She will serve 10 years in prison, 5 in home detention and 5 years of probation.
Harris must serve eight and a half years of the prison sentence before she begins serving home detention, according to the 7th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
“A trial can be a very stressful experience for everyone involved. I hope the Dickard family can rest easier knowing that Katie Harris is going to prison and she is being held responsible for the death of their child,” Solicitor Barry Barnette said in a statement.
