CONWAY, S.C. (WNCN) — A teen girl died and the another person was injured after a single-vehicle crash that happened near Conway on Friday night.
The crash happened on U.S. Highway 701 near Poplar Church Road in Horry County around 10:15 p.m., the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The wreck happened when the driver of a Chevrolet pick up truck hit a mailbox, then ran into a ditch where the truck then flipped over, SC Troopers said.
The passenger, 17-year-old Chassidy McDowell, died on scene and the driver was taken to the hospital with injuries.
By Saturday evening, there were dozens of messages on social media about the loss of Chassidy, who was an Aynor High School student.
“Everyone please remember the McDowell family in you prayers as they go through this heart wrenching loss,” wrote Keona Squires on Facebook. “She is gone but will never be forgotten. We will miss you dearly Chassidy and we all love you with all our hearts. Rest in peace Chassidy.”
Chassidy was a senior in high school and “loved animals, dancing and hunting,” according to her obituary.
“Chassidy was a loving daughter, sister, and friend to all. She was a very honest and sincere person that loved everyone. She had a personality and a smile that everyone loved,” her obituary said.
“She was beautiful, undeniably loved and she loved life itself, even more. She danced her heart out and made a forever mark in the hearts and lives of others. In a world that is tarnished, she remained unchanged,” relative Morgan Rogers wrote on Facebook. “The sharp knife of a short life has struck our family and we would like to ask for continued prayers and support especially for my aunt Christie McDowell, BJ, and Joseph McDowell…”
According to the SC Highway Patrol, neither of the occupants of the pickup truck were wearing seat belts. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The family will receive friends at Watson Funeral Services in Conway from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral services will be held 4:30 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hodgkins Lymphoma Foundation 115 Broadway Suite, 13011 New York, NY 10006.
