Registered NC sex offender accused of raping woman

BURLINGTON, N.C. (WFMY) – The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man accused of abducting and raping a woman.

Investigators said Mark Chamberlain, a registered sex offender, abducted the woman at knifepoint early Monday morning on Webb Avenue near Church Street.

The woman said she was taken to an area on Hanover Road in Graham where she was sexually assaulted. The woman said she was then released from the car on NC Highway 87 near the Caswell County line.

Investigators said the woman then ran to a nearby house to use the phone and reported the crime and gave a description of the car.

The Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop after seeing a similar Crown Victoria, and later arrested Chamberlain, 55.

Chamberlain, who lives on East Webb Avenue in Burlington, is charged with first degree rape. However, additional charges are pending.

The victim was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center for treatment.
