GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro Police and Animal Control Services are investigating a possible animal cruelty case.

On Tuesday, Animal Control received a tip about a dead dog and others chained up at a house on Grove Street.

Once police arrived, they discovered three dogs abandoned including one dead. They also said two dogs are extremely emaciated.

Several animal control trucks lined the street in front of the house.

Right now, authorities are still trying to figure out how long the dogs were back there alone.

Nobody lives at the house anymore.

However, neighbors tell us they’ve been concerned for a while.

Mark Allred lives behind this house and he says he’s seen the dogs roaming around the neighborhood before.

On Tuesday, when he saw one had died, he knew he had to call for help.

“It’s just heartbreaking to see dogs in this condition. Dogs are meant to be man’s best friend. They’re supposed to come in and be loved and be fed and watered. For someone to treat them like that, it’s just heartbreaking,” said Allred. “I can’t believe that something like this could happen in my own neighborhood.”

Charges are pending against the homeowners.

Anyone found guilty of felony animal cruelty could face multiple years in prison depending on the severity of the case and their prior criminal history.
