DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A family has won its fight to get Medicaid a to cover a critical treatment for their son, who’s battling cancer.
The Pietrowski family and doctors had been urging the state to approve a crucial stem cell therapy for 13-year-old Hunter Pietrowski. Doctors found a tumor on his brain in June.
On Wednesday, they were denied. They took to social media to try to rally people to their cause and push the state to change its decision. On Friday, their appeal was approved. Treatments will begin Monday.
The family welcomed the state’s change of position.
“That means a lot for us because he’s going to get the protocol and the treatment that he needs regardless of the blue and black tape that Medicaid has on their end,” said Tiffany Pietrowski, Hunter’s mother.
