Man captured after crashing stolen car in Wake County, authorities say

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WNCN) — Authorities say that a man speeding in a stolen car crashed on U.S. 64 Bypass near Knightdale on Monday afternoon and then jumped and ran.

The incident happened around 5:15 p.m. on U.S. 64 Bypass when the man in the stolen car wrecked and hit another car under the I-540 bridge, officials said.

The wreck happened when the stolen car driver hit a guard rail, spun around on the highway, crashed into another car and then hit a wall under the bridge, according to officials on the scene.

The man in the stolen car then jumped out of the car and ran, authorities say.

A manhunt ensued with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol looking for the man in nearby woods.

Just after 6 p.m., authorities captured the man using K-9 units.

Speed was a factor the in the crash, a trooper at the scene told CBS North Carolina.
