TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – A Tampa Bay area man is looking for answers after receiving a voter identification card with someone else’s name.
“Either it’s incompetency or fraud,” Manny Tamargo said.
Tamargo showed the voter identification card and another envelope with a voter registration number, which he says he recently received in the mail.
“It has my address,” Tamargo said. “(But) it has a lady’s name who I do not know.”
He believes one of two things happened. A county worker could have put in the wrong address for this unknown woman, Tamargo said. Or, he continued, someone could have filed the paperwork illegally.
“So, why couldn’t someone, if I wanted to, give it to them and let them go over in this early voting, show them this card, and vote?” he wondered. “I know something’s wrong … This shouldn’t happen.”
He’s going to send the card and the letter back to the state, saying the woman doesn’t live at the house and that he’s been there since 1991.
Tamargo’s concerns come as Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has claimed there’s a rigged voting system. Those allegations are spurring doubts in some.
“I’ve never been confident because of the issues we’ve had in the past, like the chads,” Felicia Ajala of Hudson said.
However, a new CNN/ORC poll shows 7 out of 10 voters are confident their choices will be accurately accounted for. In addition, 8 out of 10 voters believe the loser of the election should concede. When asked in the final presidential debate, Trump refused to say he’d accept the results of the election.
Tampa Bay area resident Tammie Curry said the system is fair.
“I believe it’s not rigged,” Curry said. “I can believe the stories if I want to but I’m not going to.”
The Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections said claims of voter fraud are unfounded.
“I’m extremely confident. It is so non-existent. We don’t see it. I’ve been looking for fraud or suppression since I’ve been here and I haven’t found either one,” Craig Latimer said.
Latimer said he’ll try to get to the bottom of Tamargo’s voter registration card issue.
