WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) — A man who killed himself at a shooting range in Wilmington on Monday left a note behind that led investigators to an apartment where a woman’s body was found.
According to officials, Justin Hakeem Walker, 26, went to Shooter’s Choice off Gordon Road shortly before 2:30 p.m. and rented three handguns to shoot at the indoor range.
The sheriff’s office said Walker went into the gun range section of the business and shot himself in the head. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives found a note during their investigation that said there was another person involved in this incident located off Dapple Court.
They tipped off Wilmington Police investigators, who found 23-year-old Rebecca Ann Jones dead inside the apartment around 3 p.m. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.
New Hanover County sheriff’s deputies said Walker killed his estranged girlfriend before killing himself.
Wilmington police investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy before determining the final cause of death.
Walker was a Marine reservist with the 4th Tank Battalion out of Camp Lejuene. He began his career in July 2009 and served in Afghanistan from January-August 2011. He was recently promoted to sergeant. Rebecca Jones was a nurse at Med North Medical Center, according to Facebook.
According to a Wilmington police report, Walker was arrested on June 1, 2014 and charged with going armed to the terror of the public, assault by pointing a gun, simple assault, and communicating threats following an incident on Tristram Place at Avalon Apartments.
Jones was listed as Walker’s girlfriend in the report.
