WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The man who shot himself at a Wilmington gun range Monday had previous run-ins with law enforcement.
Justin Hakeem Walker, who Wilmington Police say killed himself after murdering his fiancee, Rebecca Jones, was accused of pointing a gun at a man’s head in 2014.
Preliminary autopsy results show Jones died of strangulation.
Jennifer Crumley, then Jennifer Croft, said she was a close friend of Rebecca Jones, the woman who was found dead in a Wilmington apartment Monday. Crumley said she told police Walker held a gun to her friend’s head after a night out celebrating Jones’s 21st Birthday.
Walker was charged with simple assault, assault by pointing a gun, and going armed to the terror of the public.
Crumley said she met Jones in 2012 when they were neighbors, and became fast friends. In the early morning of June 1, 2014, Crumley said she and two other friends brought Jones back home to her apartment. She said Walker later showed up intoxicated and began to argue with Jones.
Here’s what Crumley said happened next:
“In the past their arguments have gotten physical. So I asked my 2 friends to take Rebecca outside, I spoke with Justin and explained I would take Becca home with me to keep everyone safe and we could all get together the next day. He said okay. I left, and as I was walking down the steps (Rebecca lived on the 3rd floor) , Justin came running down the steps, went into his car got his gun and loaded it. One friend, Michael, took Becca and ran to my house, Justin grabbed the other Michael and held the gun to his head. As soon as Justin’s back was to me, I ran also.”
