RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Cats are cute and (usually) lovable the entire year, but Oct. 29 is the big day that they are celebrated around the globe each year.
The annual holiday was founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige who also created National Dog Day.
She said that it started as a way to celebrate everything that cats do — purr, being cute, playing — and occasionally getting into trouble because of their curiosity.
The day is also used to encourage adoption rather than buying from pet stores that are possibly supplied by kitten mills, Paige says.
“They give just as much unconditional love as dogs,” Paige said about why she launched the holiday.
“They all need help, love and compassion.”
