MATTHEWS, N.C. (WBTV) — A young girl who had to be transported from Monkey Joe’s over the weekend died of natural causes, the medical examiner has determined.
The 3-year-old, identified by family as Erin Washington, was taken to the hospital from Monkey Joe’s in Windsor Square, in Matthews, Saturday afternoon. Matthews police said someone called 911 about a girl “in distress” at 4:53 p.m. She was taken to Novant Health Matthews Medical Center and later died.
Sunday evening, Monkey Joe’s told WBTV the child was “not in distress on an inflatable or engaging in any arcade games.” The company also said they did not know what caused the 3-year-old’s death, but said police are investigating.
“Video footage from Saturday has been reviewed by management as well as sent to the local authorities. There is no evidence in the footage of any injuries taking place at Monkey Joe’s. We continue to work with local authorities and have shared our thoughts and prayers with the family, a spokesperson for Monkey Joe’s said Monday.
The Matthews Police Department announced several hours later it had received information from the Medical Examiner’s Office that her death was due to natural causes. Police say the investigation is being closed with no foul play or negligence found.
“Erin is the beautiful daughter of Eric and Nykesha Washington. She was the most hilarious little girl,” the girl’s aunt, Ebony Washington, posted on a GoFundMe page started for the family. “She touched more lives than people who live to be 100.”
The family is asking for prayers and help with funeral expenses, which can be made to the GoFundMe page.
The family says they are asking for prayers at this time.
