RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Target announced Thursday that they plan to build two “flexible-format” stores near the campuses of North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina.
According to a press release, Target will open a store in October 2017 at 2512 Hillsborough St., which has been the home of The Alley bowling alley since 1960. The Alley will not close, but instead move to its new home in Durham.
Flexible-format stores are smaller, quick-trip Target stores built in urban locations, usually on college campuses, the release said. The N.C. State store will be approximately 23,000 square feet and will feature:
- A selection of fresh groceries, including grab-and-go items for students on a budget
- A curated assortment of dorm and apartment essentials
- Select men’s and women’s apparel and accessories
- Health, personal care and beauty items
- Portable technology products and accessories
- Apparel and accessories from local sports teams
- Services include a CVS Pharmacy, Target Mobile and Order Pickup
The Hillsborough Street location will be the first in Raleigh and the second in North Carolina. The UNC campus will also be home to a Target store.
Target plans to build stores near N.C. State, UNC, the University of Chicago, the University of Southern California and the University of Florida, among others, the release states. These stores will all be built between now and December 2017.
Target currently operates 30 of these smaller, specialized stores. They have now announced 21 more for 2017 and 2018, according to the release.
“Growth on college campuses and in urban markets is a priority for Target. We’re able to serve more guests by adding flexible-format stores near top universities across the country, including the quick-trip shopping experience we’ll provide in 2017 to the North Carolina State University campus,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Properties, Target. “We’re thrilled to open our first flexible-format store in Raleigh and to join the Wolfpack community.”
The 21,000-square-foot Chapel Hill store will be located in the Carolina Square development near the intersection of Columbia and Franklin streets.
That store will have a pharmacy, Target Mobile and order pick-up.
