1 killed, 6 hospitalized after SUV flips on I-40 in Johnston Co.

COATS CROSSROADS, N.C. (WNCN) — A 21-year-old is dead and six people were sent to the hospital after an accident that shut down part of Interstate 40 for two hours in Johnston County, officials said.

Chance Mizzell, 21 of Willow Springs, was headed home from work, driving an SUV westbound on I-40 near mile-marker 321 in Johnston County, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Troopers believe Mizzell lost the tread on one of his tires at about 5:45 p.m. The SUV rolled several times before hitting an eastbound vehicle, troopers said.

Mizzell died at the scene. His passenger, 20-year-old Cary resident David Hines, was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, troopers said.

Both Mizzell and Hines were wearing seat belts, and there’s no indication of speeding or alcohol at this time, the highway patrol said.

A family of five, including three children, were in the other vehicle, troopers said. The five were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The parents were wearing seat belts and children in their proper seats, according to officials.

The highway eastbound was blocked for about two hours.
