HOPE MILLS, N.C. (WNCN) — Sunday was proclaimed Greatest Generation Day in Hope Mills.
As the city came together to honor World War II veterans, a ceremony was held in downtown Hope Mills at the Veterans Memorial.
Reflections were given by the town mayor and also by a World War II veteran.
“Those who have served in the army and the difficulty that they’ve been through and what they’ve sacrificed for our nation, we have an appreciation for those who have served,” said Denise Nelson, who attended the event.
Town leaders identified at least 45 World War II veterans from Hope Mills.
Only eight of them are still living.
“We are here today in honor of my father-in-law Kelly Gore, everyone knew him as Bud, he passed away this year, but he was a World War II veteran and a very precious ma,” said Brenda Gore.
