Chapel Hill police: Thieves are targeting unlocked vehicles

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — Chapel Hill police are investigating 22 vehicle break-ins that have happened since the start of the month.

That’s significantly more than the same period last year and a higher rate than scene in recent months, police said.

“In nearly all of the break-ins, the vehicles were left unlocked,” police said.

Items including cash, wallets, a laptop, a tablet, a firearm, sunglasses and more have been taken, police said. People should remove those sorts of items before leaving their vehicles and should also lock their vehicles, police said.

The police are sending out extra patrols to try to deal with the problem.

If anyone with information about the crimes should call either the Chapel Hill Police Department at (919) 968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at (919) 942-7515.
