Bell painting, beloved ritual of UNC-Duke rivalry, to continue in wake of football game

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — After Thursday night’s UNC-Duke game, the tradition of painting the Victory Bell went on, but it nearly didn’t.

Earlier this week, UNC unveiled the bell’s new look with both UNC and Duke’s colors on it.

Some fans and players were frustrated by the choice, wanting the winner to be able to paint it their shade of blue.

That led UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham to tweet that those fans had been heard.

The painting will go on as normal.

Thursday night, the Blue Devils got to paint it after beating Carolina 28-27.
