CLAYTON, N.C. (WNCN) – A Clayton mother faces felony abuse charges after officials said her 3-year-old son suffered “devastating brain and skull injuries.”

Aquilla Yvette Stewart, 40, of Clayton was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony negligent child abuse serious bodily injury, Clayton officials said.

On Oct. 24, Stewart called 911 to report her son was unconscious. Stewart told officials her son “appeared normal” until the call but had fallen the day before.

The boy suffers from a medical condition that requires him to receive medical attention immediately following an injury, Clayton police said.

The 3-year-old was transported to WakeMed Children’s ER and then to Duke Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

He has undergone multiple surgeries for “devastating brain and skull injuries,” officials said.

Clayton police received an intake complaint on November 2 from Johnston County Social Services regarding the child.

Duke University Campus police help Clayton police arrest Stewart Wednesday.

She is being held in the Johnston County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
