Nwabu Cyril Efobi, 56, of Raleigh, was found shot to death in the 400 block of Hill Street, across from St. Augustine’s University Tuesday evening around 6:20 p.m., police said.

Efobi was a cab driver for Universal Cab Company. He was found dead outside his cab.

Two days after his death, coworkers spoke to CBS North Carolina and described the man they called “Efobi” as a team player, churchgoer and joke-teller with a great sense of humor.

According to coworkers, Efobi moved to Raleigh from Nigeria in the late 1970s for school. He attended Shaw University and had worked at Universal Cab Company for more than 10 years.

Oris Duru, Efobi’s manager, said he was a team player and was very involved in his church. Duru said that Efobi’s wife and family lives back in Nigeria and that he moved to the area to provide for them.

Duru said Efobi never bothered anyone else and his murder shocked him.

“He was a very easy-going guy, very jovial, very playful…he doesn’t have problems with anybody. He always tries to mind his own business,” he said. “It’s very unfortunate that his life ended this way. I was broken…I couldn’t believe it.”

Another coworker, Godwin Lewechi, said he’ll most remember Efobi for his jokes and great sense of humor.

He also said that his coworker’s murder continues to highlight the dangers for cab drivers. Lewechi pointed to another Raleigh cab driver, Jose Nicolas Dominguez, 55, who was killed back in February as an example of how dangerous the job can be.

Lewechi also expressed shock regarding the murder.

“I got a call that he was dead, he had been shot and killed [and] since then we’ve been wondering what went wrong,” he said. “Why would somebody want to commit such a gruesome, heinous crime?”
