Durham teen killed after U-Haul truck veers off street, driver facing charges

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Pedestrian Nickeya Anita Cureton, 18, of Durham was killed Friday after being hit by a U-Haul truck.

Police say the driver of the U-Haul truck, John Gieser, 58, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, has been charged with failure to maintain lane control and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Gieser veered off a street early Friday afternoon, striking and killing Cureton, police said.

Just before 12:45 p.m. the rental truck was headed south on North Roxboro Street near its intersection with East Britania Avenue when it it veered off the road to the right and hit the teenager.

Cureton was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The investigation is still underway.
