SHELBY, N.C. (WBTV) — A body was found inside a burning mobile home in Cleveland County Monday.
Crews were called to a fire at a home on Christopher Road, which turned into a homicide investigation a short time later, according to Cleveland County Captain Joel Shores.
Detectives say the person inside the home had been shot, and they believe the fire was intentionally set as a cover up.
“Body has at least one gunshot wound, possibly more. It appears, and let me re-emphasize ‘appears,’ that the mobile home was set on fire to cover the homicide,” Shores said.
Neighbors and family said Danny Goins lived in the home. They said they haven’t heard from him and fear he is the one who was found inside.
Goins’ brother, Rodney, was at the scene all day. He said he cannot understand why anyone would do this to his brother, if it was indeed his body found.
“He’s just a good person to be around. He’s full of life,” Goins said.
Neighbors said Danny Goins owns an auto body shop, and was someone everyone in the community knew.
“It’s just a shock to everybody,” said Gary Sanders, a neighbor and friend.
Detectives are awaiting word from the medical examiner’s office on the person’s identity. Officials said they are looking for the son of the man who lives at the home.
The SBI and the Cleveland County District Attorney were also assisting on scene.
