RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Raleigh police said an incident at an apartment off Gorman Street Sunday started as an attempted robbery that ended with three people being taken to the hospital.
Evan Robert Schwepker-Thomas, 20, and and Darius Dontae Mccalston, 28, entered the apartment in the 3200 block of Shire Lane just before noon.
One of them was armed with a handgun, police said.
Three men, two women and a 3-year-old girl were at apartment when Schwepker-Thomas and Mccalston entered the residence.
A fight ensued between Schwepker-Thomas and Mccalston and several of the people in the apartment.
During that struggle, Henry Chavez Jr., 27, was shot in his left hand.
One of the people inside the apartment was able to get the handgun from a suspect and shoot Schwepker-Thomas in the hip.
Schwepker-Thomas and Mccalston both sustained injuries to their heads when they someone beat them with a baseball bat.
The suspects left the area in a vehicle driven by Cassandra Marie Duplanti, 23, police said.
All three went to WakeMed Garner for treatment where they were detained by Garner police.
Schwepker-Thomas was transported to WakeMed in Raleigh for continued treatment.
Mccalston and Duplanti were taken to the Wake County Detention Center.
Mccalston was charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. He is being held under a $150,000 secured bond.
Duplanti was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. She is being held under a $30,000 secured bond.
Schwepker-Thomas will be charged once he is released from the hospital.
He face charges of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Two people inside the apartment were also charged following the incident.
Tiffany Donelle Miller, 37, and Christian Michael Miller, 20, were charged with possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.
Christian is Tiffany Miller’s son, police confirmed.
Chavez was transported to REX Hospital for treatment of his left hand injury.
