HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) – A man is dead following a crash that shut down part of Interstate 77 in Huntersville Wednesday morning. The crash happened just after 8:30 a.m. on I-77 northbound near Exit 19, Hambright Road.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a tractor trailer ran out of fuel and was stopped in the center lane of the interstate. A 26-year-old man from Charlotte was traveling northbound at 65 miles per hour when he hit the truck.
Officials believe the driver didn’t brake and was killed on impact.
Troopers suspect the driver was distracted, but said they didn’t know yet what caused the distraction. There were no skid marks prior to the point of impact.
A second person went to Carolinas Medical Center in Huntersville with minor injuries. No names have been released.
